Uber wants to test flying cars in Los Angeles by 2020 and has teamed up with NASA to help make that happen. Mindy Weisberger, Senior Writer at Live Science, joins Cheddar to discuss the reality of this. She says companies are very far away from making even a physical prototype of the vehicle Uber will need to deploy a fleet of flying cars.
She says that NASA has already started working on a program to regulate low-flying altitude regulations.
However partnerships aside, it's tricky to project what the infrastructure requirements would be for an aircraft that doesn't exist yet.
She believes Uber sees itself as a visionary. It's not only thinking about the actual car but about creating the software behind it and the infrastructure allowing cars to fly around America.
For all the people who truly believe this will happen, what will the car look like? Weisberger says it would seat 4 people and be able to land on top of buildings in a vertical manner. However, she believes we will see self-driving cars on the road before we see flying cars. Source
